The latest evolution of Yamaha's digital sound proector range adds additional support for 4K on the HDMI inputs and outputs, allowing 4K passthrough on 4K 50/60p as well as HDMI 2.0. There's no HDCP 2.2 though, although we are not convinced this is a necessity on AV equipment.

It replaces last years YSP-2200 with improvements on sound as well as features. The subwoofer certainly has more weight and presence and we think works better with the soundbar to produce an integrated sound. There's also some extra flexibility on HDMI inputs with 3 available, allowing you to use this as the central hub of your cinema experience.

Positioning the soundbar is pretty straightforward. Stick it under your TV and that's about it - the subwoofer can be placed anywhere in the room as long as it is on the floor. The best results are if you put the soundbar in the middle of a flat wall in a rectangular room but the system copes very well with unusual room shapes. Even if you are putting this in a corner you'll still get great effects.

Use the included microphone to fine tune the soundbar and suddently you'll hear sound projected to the side and behind of you - just as you would expect in the cinema. This is a clever emulation indeed. We've used clips with planes flying overhead and it's very effective - the plane clearly sounds like it is travelling behind you even though there are no speakers there!

Sound quality is good; this isn't a budget bit of kit. It's worth considering what you'd get if you went stereo instead, or if you went fully wired - both options will give you a better overall sound but not by much and each has other disadvantages. It therefore makes sense that this is the perfect product for wire free surround sound.

You can also wall mount the soundbar if you want using the SPM-K20 wall bracket. It's not included but it's an optional extra if you do want to wall mount.

What Hifi magazine reviewed this soundbar and awarded it 5 stars. It was also a winner in the What Hifi 2014 awards, scooping the 'Best Soundbar £600+' prize.

"The YSP-2500's expansive soundfield, punch and scale are impressive, and it's the most appealing solution for those that want cinema-style sound without going the full hog with a 5.1 system."
