The Yamaha YSP-2200 digital sound projector forms part of Yamaha's famous YSP range. Providing virtual surround sound from a single soundbar, this series cleverly uses an array of speakers and effects to fool your ears into thinking there are speakers placed throughout your room. This particular unit emulates a 7.1 system and will convince you there are lots of speakers in your room.

Is it effective? Partially, yes. In fact, we think it's as close to as possible you can get without physically having speakers placed around your room. There's still a slight lack of weight and presence of actually having a speaker physically in the locations of a true 7.1 system but when weighing it against the alternative of having a huge amount of extra kit and cables spread around your room, we think this is a realistic alternative and certainly not just a gimmick.

In our tests, we found that there was a decent soundstage presented to us. Sound seemed to move around us - both left to right and front to back. There was a slight lack of weight on sounds moving directly from the rear - for example a plane passing overhead - and it was these most specific of scenarios where the limitations of such a system showed up. However, in general the effect was enough to fool us and an entire film could be enjoyed as if in a true home cinema.

This particular model is the cheapest to use a subwoofer. You can get the YSP-1400 as a cheaper alternative which does not have a separate subwoofer, but we do find that the extra depth of sound a subwoofer adds really helps with overal sound quality. The subwoofer thankfully is easy to place and can be put in a horizontal or vertical position so you can fit it easily in your room. Moreover, as with any subwoofer, it's easy to hide it behind a sofa or even behind your TV system without effecting sound quality.

All in all this is a recommendation from us. It's also been strongly recommended by the likes of What Hi-Fi too, and is a great alternative if you really don't want that extra clutter in your room but want way more than just a stereo system at the front.
