Details

It's been a very close battle in the AV receiver market this year, and the peak of the action has been at the £500 mark. Yamaha held the crown last year and pretty much controlled the market with the RX-V673. However, this year the likes of Onkyo, Sony and Denon have all upped their game making Yamaha work hard to keep their crown.

The Yamaha RX-V675 has replaced the outgoing RX-V673 and has subtley improved upon it but hasn't necessarily broken the mould. This is both of course good and bad - why change what was good anyway...but have Yamaha's rivals caught up? Essentially we'd say it's narrowed the margin but ultimately this 7.2 AV receiver is still one of the top choices. However - in our opinions it has lost a slight edge on overall performance. It has a slightly brash sound now in direct comparison to some of the more smoother receivers on the market.

This isn't an issue with careful speaker pairing, but stick it with a strident and forward speaker such as KEF and you may find it a little shrill for your liking. However, put on the B&W MT50 package and you'll slip into heaven. It's all in the matching!

This is potentially why the Yamaha this year didn't win out on the prestigious What Hi-Fi Awards 2013 and was picked to the post by the Sony STR-DN1040. But it was close - beleive us. We still think if you have the Yamaha in your sights its a good choice and you should still keep it there.

Why not call our experts for some advice if you want to know the best speakers to pair with it - or if you want to know if your current speakers are a good match. We're always happy to help and of course we'll also ensure you get the very best deal.
