A mixed bag this one. We like Yamaha products and we do enjoy the Yamaha RX-V500D, but we have a problem with it. Essentially. its the price. It's a 5.1 AV receiver and although it can be networked, it doesn't offer much else. Typically you'll see the likes of Denon and Onkyo selling these for around the £300 mark, but this receiver is closer to £400. This means as much as we like it, the price does seem a bit high.

Of course there's a reason why - DAB. This is also one of the very few AV receivers on the market that actually has DAB fitted, and we think that's great. As it is essentially a UK only feature, it means we finally get something that we wish was on all AV receivers, which usually only carry FM. This carries both. Sadly however that has a knock on effect on the pricing, understandably so. To make a receiver for just the UK costs Yamaha more, as does putting in the DAB technlogy - and that is the reason for that price.

So...is it a good AV receiver? Yes, absolutely. It's also quite well specified with networking available and an optional wireless module if you need to go wireless (unlike Denon for example). It's 3D compatible and will handle 4K too, although unsurprisingly no upscaling at this price. It's got all the latest sound formats covered too, and it also has an auto set up courtesy of Yamahas own YPAO system - perhaps not quite as good as Audyssey, but actually pretty good.

It also benefits from all of Yamahas music and sound experience and with the addition of a few clever sound processing modes, it can produce quite a good sound. It's just that price which pushes it from great to OK - and that's the shame.

Our advice is this - if you have to have DAB on your AV receiver then get this. It really is a good receiver, and yes you are paying a little over the odds but you are paying for something you will struggle to get any other way short of paying for a separate DAB tuner - and that will be way more expensive than buying this receiver.
