Yamaha RX-V381 5.1 AV receiver

"For most people 5.1 is enough, and as long as the receiver can handle 4K and supports Bluetooth then that is enough! Saving a lot of money over higher specified models, the RX-V381 provides great quality sound at a fraction of the cost.

The downside is that it doesn't support 7.1 nor some of the higher audio features such as Dolby Atmos, nor is there internet features, but we think that for a classic 5.1 system this is perfect!"

We really like budget AV receivers because they tend to pack a lot of power in and have basic but important features. This makes them ideal for classic 5.1 systems! You get the performance you need along with the features that are essential, but without having to spend out more than you need to.

Of course, if you want 7.1, video upscaling, internet streaming etc then this isn't the AV receiver for you (and you'll need to spend a lot more), but for most of us this receiver is about perfect!

As well as having a total of 500W power (more than enough to run most speaker systems we can think of), it's also got the most important HDMI features you'll need. Plug in up to 4 HDMI sources such as a Blu-ray player, games console or even one of the new Ultra HD Blu-ray players and this receiver will provide you with high end audio courtesy of Dolby TrueHD, plus all the support you need for Ultra HD/4K video.

For the more technically minded of you, that means HDCP2.2, 4K60p, HDR and even BT.2020 pass-through. Or for the rest of us, it's got the latest features!

There's no video upscaling here (we wouldn't expect that at this price) but you can plug anything into it and it will work. That's about as much as most of us need. There's even 3D support here too.

On top of this, you'll also get Bluetooth streaming too so you can enjoy music straight from your phone or tablet computer.

All in all we struggle to think of a reason to spend more unless you really do want some of those higher end features. If you do, then take a look at the RX-V481 which also supports internet streaming, or if you need 7.1 then try the RX-V581. You can also contact any of our product experts who will be happy to help find the right AV receiver for you!
