"Although the RX-A840 might have introduced you to the AVENTAGE range, it's this receiver that really takes things up a level and delivers cracking sound along with a huge range of features. With the classically great sounds and enhancements from Yamaha it's ideal."

OK, it's not the actual first in the range, but as it's the first to have the full sized AVENTAGE chassis we always tend to consider the Yamaha RX-A1040 as the entry level into the AVENTAGE. The RX-A840 will for us always be a half way house!

So what is the AVENTAGE range? Well basically put it's the top level range from Yamaha for their AV receivers. Their 'day-ware' range is of course  the RX-V range and features some pretty classic and award wining receivers. This range takes those basics and throws at it everything possible to take it to the next level. The result is a far superior sound...with a price tag to prove it!

So - spend more and get better. Makes sense so far...but how does it sound? Well it's definitely better. You'll need decent speakers too to get the most out of it. We find that the B&W range works rather well with it, particuarly the MT-60D system which should come as no surprise, but it's equally adept at speakers from the likes of Dali, Monitor Audio and Bose to name just a few.

Set up and room correction is standard of course and it won't take you long to get a system up and running. Choose a 5.1 system set up or stretch up to a 7.2 system, it can handle either or indeed anything in between.

Sound is tight and musical - film soundtracks thump along with great energy and can deal with both subtle detail and crunching mayhem whilst still getting the detail we want from it. Switch to audio and it's surprisingly immersive. It doesn't quite hit the same stereo notes as a receiver from the likes of Pioneer or Rotel but has enough tweaks to compensate for it.

Get online and you'll be able to download the Yamaha control app on your phone which is a delight. They've spent a lot of money developing this and it's one of the upper end control systems on the market. It's also able to let you tweak the system on the fly with ease which we like a lot. The usual other features you'll get online are there too if you need them - vTuner of course is handy.

Overall we like this receiver a lot. There's a couple of others out there worth thinking over, but if you are already a Yamaha fan you'll know what you'll be getting here and will undoubtedly love it.
