Yamaha have a good reputation on stereo audio sound but come under stiff competition from the more dedicated stereo companies. The CD-S700 CD player is a mid end player that is in direct competition with the bottom end of such manufacturers. Players from the likes of Rotel and Marantz snap hard on its heels...but this player still holds out well.

That's largely down to price - under the £400 mark this player makes sense. Rotel's cheapest player is well over £100 more and although it's better, it is a big stretch up in budget. The biggest competition here is from Marantz.

Play them side by side and it's a close call. We probably prefer the Marantz, but this is only on careful weigh up. The Yamaha had a slightly harsher edge to it but equally reveals a touch more detail. Prudent use of a good quality interconnect helps the Yamaha though and with the right amplifier it can deliver a surprisingly sonic sound.

We think this Yamaha will suit some - but not all. Don't discount it completely, even with Marantz picking up awards on the CD6005, but we would certainly look at that player too before making your decision.
