Yamaha A-S301 stereo amplifier

Yamaha A-S301 stereo amplifier

"Released in 2014, this amplifier replaces the AS-300 but adds quite a bit extra with a rather extensive range of support for digital devices. It's not Smart so you can't network it, but with digital inputs and the option to add Bluetooth you'll get the most from your digital sources."

The Yamaha A-S301 is a step up from its predecessor the A-S300 with the addition of a DAC. This moves it from being just an analogue amplifier into the digital world with on board decoding for any external digital sources. You can also add the YBA-11 Bluetooth adaptor to enable you to stream wirelessly from your phone or tablet computer.

But what does the DAC do? In simple terms it decodes digital signal into audio signal which is what the digital co-axial and optical inputs are for. Plug in any digital device and this amplifier will do a great job in decoding the signal - much better than some budget CD players too. If you have a mid to high end CD player we'd recommend trying to connect it through both digital and analogue methods to see which gives you the best resullts, but theorertically any CD player under the value of this amplifier will benefit from using the amplifiers on board DAC.

It's of course worth remembering that this amplifer is still great with analogue too, and with 8 inputs, 2 tape loops, A/B speaker switching, tone controls and direct bypass PLUS a moving magnet record input (phew!) there's a lot here to keep you happy. In fact this is one of the highest specified amplifiers on the market purely on the features front.

Sound quality is of course important too but you should find yourself more than happy on that front too. There's a couple of other amplifiers on the market that contend strongly against this amplifier, but neither has all the features of the A-S301 so you may find this is the better choice for your own needs. Sound is strong and vibrant - Yamaha use a high quality audio circuit based on their ToP-ART concept which through a mixture of solid chassis and quality components gives you a huge overall boost on sound quality.

The only minus on the amplifier (and it is a small one) is that at 60W per channel there's bigger amps out there. Of course for the vast majority of us 60W per channel is more than sufficient and will drive most speakers easily plus give great volume, but if you have a particularly large set of speakers to drive or you want to blow the house down then it may be worth considering the A-S501 instead - around £50 more but with 85W per channel which will drive whatever you can imagine with ease.

In short, it's a very capable amplifier and incredbily versatile. We think it's a definite winner.
