The budget stereo amplifier market is tough, and there are lots out there to compete in the under £200 mark. So is the Yamaha A-S300 a good choice? Well, overall we like this amplifier and think its well priced however there are some areas it lacks a little in.

On the plus side, it actually feels like a solid amplfiier. Build quality is good and there's no plastic feel here. Get it out of the box and you'll feel you've purchased something of quality. Plug it in and that feeling is mirrored; we've tried it with its accompanying CD player the CD-S300 and found that the combination gave detail and musicality worthy of the overall price tag.

All the connections you would expect are there, including bass and treble controls plus balance and loudness, and of course a Pure Direct mode to bypass all these features if you'd prefer an unadulterated sound. Music sounds clear and crisp - there's no harshness to the sound as you might expect from similarly priced amplifiers, and our little KEF speakers were driven admirably.

However, that there lies the issue. If you want to run larger speakers, then this amplifier doesn't quite hit the mark. It runs them of course - at 65W a channel it has enough power to do that - but it begins to lack the control and elegance it so easily displayed on smaller speakers. Sound becomes a little lumpy and less detailed and you'll be turning it up to try and get the drive you are missing...sadly to little avail.

So where does this leave us? Well, if you aren't intending to run large speakers and if you are happy enough to get great sound from bookshelves or stand mounts then this amplifier is actually at the top of its game. We'd still recommend it - don't be put off by its performance with larger speakers, if you aren't going to use larger speakers, its immaterial so please don't get put off - you'll struggle to get better for your smaller speaker and this amplifier is MORE than powerful enough for smaller speakers.

But if large speakers are where you are at, this amplifier really isn't strong enough for the job. Your best bet is to jump up to the A-S500 for a bit more money (and power), or look at alternative stereo amplifiers.
