Sony have been trying hard to compete on quality 3D Blu-ray players after some strong competition from Panasonic, and this year they seem to have cracked it. Both this player the Sony BDP-S4100 and its big brother the BDP-S790 have been picking up admiration and awards across the board, making them a very easy choice.

The latest and most prestigious award this player has picked up is from What Hi-Fi who announced this as the Product of the Year for players under £100. That's a rather special award, and is considered one of the finest in the industry. It's also nicely reassuring if you aren't sure which product is right for you - with a stamp of approval of that calibre it is hard to argue against this player.

Of course the proof is in the pudding, as they say, and our own tests reveal this to be an exceptionally good player. Picture quality is so vital nowadays, especially with the increasing quality in flat screen televisions, and a poor player looks - well, rubbish really. Not so here. The picture looks incredilby natural, paritcularly on plasma televisions where you could simply dive in. Ironic considering Sony don't themselves make plasma televisions! Of course, it still looks great on LED sets too.

Colours are rendered well, and we could find little trace of blocking in low light scenes, something that often blights budget players. Motion was rendered well and even contrast seemed to be handled with ease. Surprising considering the price.

There's one trade off on the price over this players older brother the BDP-S5100 which is there is no wi-fi. This may of course matter not to you - you may not need the Smart features built into this player, or you may be able to easily wire it to your router, but if you can't you'll need to purchase a dongle which means you may want to consider the BDP-S5100 which essentially is the same unit but with wireless built in.

However, beyond that small critique there is little to fault. It's 3D of course, and you'll also find it can play back pretty much anything you can throw at it including SACD. As well as network playback you can also use a USB stick to playback from too. The remote is functional, but download the app to really get things going.

We like this player a lot - apart from that tiny niggle with wireless. But hey - nothing is perfect and this is as close as we think you'll get for under £"100.
