The Pioneer VSX-528 keeps costs low by trimming back on the fat and providing a basic 5.1 AV receiver. As things go, most of us run 5.1 only anyway so there's a good arguement for saving money and keeping to a 5.1 receiver. But is there too much sacrifice?

By spending not a lot more you can get quite a bit better - we miss any form of auto set up and also video upscaling on this receiver, and a few more pounds will get you these features. And of course, 7.1 doesn't mean you have to run 7 speakers. You can bi-amp for better sound, or run another set of speakers in another room.

It's these limitations that make us wary about this receiver. However, if all you really want is 5.1 and nothing else, then this receiver does the job. It is with some surprise however that this receiver therefore comes with networking - albiet wired only - and the ability to use Bluetooth (with the addition of a dongle). For a receiver trying to keep costs low, it is an odd addition as it undoubtedly increases costs. Nonetheless, it is always good to be able to connect to the internet, particularly as it gives you access to the Pioneer Control App for your phone.

Sound quality is fair - it won't light up your world, but it isn't bad either. It pumps along and does the job, equally adept on movies and music although perhaps not quite as musical as the likes of Onkyo or Denon, a surprise for a Pioneer product. The room correction is missed here - it can sound flat in some rooms and overly harsh in others.

However, our overall impression is that if you are after basic here it is, and it works. We'd have loved to see a totally stripped back version, or perhaps no internet and room correction instead, but there is undoubtedly a market for this receiver - for the right person.
