There has always been a general misconception that digital discs are brilliant regardless of whether you buy a cheap player or an expensive one. The arguement is that if the information is stored digitally, how can the picture or sound be better on a more expensive player?

Of course, like most things in life, it isn't that simple. For a start, digital media is compressed and there isn't an exact method for uncompressing that data. Moreover, a lot of decompression relies on extrapolating brush strokes into video or audio information. Effectively imagine that what's on the disc isnt the actual movie, but a very comprehensive guide on what that movie looks and sounds like.

So imagine then that your Blu-ray player is your translator. It takes this guide, reads it, and presents to you its interpreation of what it means. A cheaper player will be rough - it will get the broad brush strokes but may miss some of the fine detail and nuances. With the Marantz UD7007 you are dealing with an expert. It not only understands fully what the film should look like, but what it should sound like too.

The end result is an outstanding picture. We struggle to find fault with it - perhaps some of the nuances may be better presented on an even higher end machine, but what you have here is so close to the original as to be perfect. Audio is equally translated to the same degree and you'll find it hard to find any faults in either.

Of course, you need a screen and sound system to justify this - there is no point in putting this through a low end system - but if you have a screen and sound system to match, you will be in for a treat.

So are there any flaws in this player? None really - if we were hyper critical we could wish for a little more from the remote which is somewhat cheap in comparison to the rest of the system, but that's about it.

We aren't the only ones shouting about this system - What Hi-Fi awarded it the Product of the Year in their 2013 Awards for Best Blu-ray player £300+. You can read the full review by clicking here.
