We first got our hands on these fantastic receivers early August with much excitement - the AVR-X3100W has been highly anticipated this year. With technology constantly moving forward it seems last years AVR-X3000 was technically redundant over 6 months prior. But what are the essential features?

The 'biggy' is of course trying to move towards Ultra HD support - a difficult task to achieve at the moment with the ever changing goalposts. Ultra HD is still as of yet undefined so manufacturers are struggling to provide a futureproof format on something that is constantly changing. Denon have opted for a receiver supporting HDMI 2.0 and a 60Hz 4K full frame content whilst ignoring HDCP 2.2. Indeed, with Onkyo the only manufacturer embracing HDCP 2.2 Denon are in fact in line with all the other major manufacturers. The reason? The current HDCP 2.2 chips will definitely not support 8K when it eventually arrives whilst the Denon chipset does, and HDCP 2.2 is looking less likely to be adopted.

This confusingly means (as far as we are concerned) that no AV manufacturer really provides full Ultra HD support, but we think Denon have jumped the right way. However, if you are thinking of buying an amp purely to get the latest Ultra HD support, we'd say wait a year or two before the format is really finalised.

That's the complex tech stuff - what about the rest? Well Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are both supported this year so connecting to this amp is easy. The usual control apps are of course available for your android or Apple phone and sound quality remains undiminished.

Audyssey is still supported on this amp - a pleasant surprise as some manufacturers are moving to cheaper (and less effective) options. Wire this system up to a decent speaker package such as the B&W MT60 pack and be prepared for some outstanding sound.

We in fact think this receiver is as close to high end as you can get without having to spend over £1,000. Sound is crisp and sharp, and movie scenes are punchy and detailed. Switch to music and although there is some compromise here, it's actually pretty good for the money. We'd rate it above most £200-300 stereo amplifiers, not a bad compliment for something designed for movies and certainly better than most AV receivers on the market.

However it is movies that this receiver really excels on and you'll find this one of the most comprehensive receivers on the market. A fine choice if you are looking to enter the world of high end AV.
